About me
I'm Lesley Ellen and I am the owner of EllenEditorial based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) (formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders – SfEP) and I follow the Institute's Code of Practice.
I am a member of the CIEP's local Edinburgh group and I am also a member of the Edinburgh Editors' Network |
Background and experience
Before becoming an editor, I worked for over 25 years in local government and other public sector organisations, where I had a strong focus on writing and editing, particularly in the following areas:
- Corporate policy – writing and editing local government policy papers and reports.
- Corporate communications – writing, editing and proofreading content for newsletters, press releases, internal and external communications messages, annual reports, websites, business letters, reports and other corporate documents.
- City promotion – writing and editing speeches for elected members as well as articles, forewords and promotional materials.
- Committee administration – writing and editing committee reports and minutes for council committees, senior management teams and working groups.
I became a freelance editor in 2013. I work primarily with research institutes, think tanks and academics on research papers, journal articles and other academic publications. I also work with public sector bodies on public policy reports and publications and with businesses and individuals on a range of publications and documents.
Clients I have worked with include Shelter Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland, UZUS Translation Agency, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, M@n@gement Journal, Frontier Economics and an international research institute in the field of development economics. I also work with academics, particularly French academics writing on the subject of organisational management, and private individuals.

'After receiving feedback on my initial submission to an economics journal, I engaged Lesley Ellen to copy-edit the paper before resubmission. Lesley was meticulous, professional, efficient and friendly – a pleasure to work with. I'm delighted to say that with Lesley's help my paper has now been approved for publication. I would highly recommend her editing services and I would certainly work with her again in the future.'
Declan French, Senior Lecturer, Queen's University Belfast
'Lesley Ellen cooperates with us regularly, proofreading and copyediting all sorts of documents translated by Polish translators and researchers, such as research papers, books, business documents, website content, corporate materials, etc. She checks them for grammatical, linguistic and logical correctness and makes sure they are written in polished, error-free English. Many articles copyedited by Lesley have been successfully published in renowned international journals. Lesley is professional, fast, meticulous and has a wonderful attitude. She is always ready to explain matters that may be problematic or unclear to non-native speakers of English. Her comments and suggestions are invaluable. She offers a friendly, efficient and confidential service. It has been a pleasure working with her. I would definitely recommend the service of EllenEditorial.'
